The Office
Location: Edappally ,Ernakulam
Client: Studio Acis
Built Area: 500 sq.ft.
As one enters the office, it becomes evident that the space epitomes creativity and energy. This 300 sq.ft office space is adorned with functional elements and spaces to accommodate a small business and to encourage creativity to deliver maximum output. The office space is divided into 2 rooms. The first room, serves as the space for the chief architect and a space for meetings. Though this might seem as a serious space, the colours that blanket the walls are stark contrasts – black, yellow, grey and white. A huge work desk with ruffled butter sheets, a drawing table and chairs take up most of the space. The desk is topped with a hanging light, that has been made of PVC pipes, twines and pulleys and the height can be adjusted at one’s will. A grid like pattern separates the doorway from the meeting space, and this pattern continues to one side to house a bookshelf to hold office supplies and books for an avid reader. The corner is lit up with a pendant light making a cozy corner for an artist to brush up some paintings or for a bookworm to plunge into his books. The doorway is lined on the side by a wall with concrete texture. This wall is complemented perfectly with a designer clock piece which keeps the office in pace! A quick look at the top shows a perfect way to use scrap. The false ceiling is made from wooden pallets that give the space a rustic feel. As we move on to the other room, it is quite evident that this the place brims with activity during the day. This is the studio space with desks made very simple by running planks of wood supported by vertical planks to separate one another’s desk space. The beauty of this space is that main elements of this room has been done by the architect and the staff itself. A white board made of glass and painted with white paint on the rear has been affixed , which commands the duties to be carried out by each person. A striking feature of this room is the fold back table, which was made considering the limited space in this office. When large worktables are required for opening up huge drawings the table can be opened and when a workshop or seminar or any activity that requires more space is required, the table can be folded up backwards. “We wanted to create a design within limitations, that responds to different space needs and voila! We have studio acis!” – Ar. Rakesh Kakkoth
